Biosketch :
After my MD (U. Louvain, 1975), I trained in Clinical Neurology (board in 1979), and went on to do a PhD in
Developmental Neurobiology, mostly working on reeler mutant mice (1978-82). I then worked as a postdoc at
Harvard/MGH for one year before coming back at U. Louvain to start and direct the Positron Tomography (PET)
functional imaging laboratory that was just installed at cyclotron center at Louvain-la-Neuve (1984-1989). In
1989, I moved to the U. Namur to resume my work in development, and I cloned the reelin gene in 1995. I came
back to U. Louvain in 2001, where I discovered a previously unrecognized key axon guidance system
implicating Celsr3 and Fzd3, which has been my main intellectual interest ever since.
Expertise and original contributions:
Human brain development (ref 3).
Evolution of cerebral cortex organization in reptiles, birds and mammals (ref 1).
In vivo imaging of brain metabolism, with the first demonstration that synaptic revision occurs in the developing
human visual cortex (ref 2).
Neurogenetics, with positional cloning of the reeler gene encoding reelin (ref 4).
Production of monoclonal antibodies to reelin (G10 & 142, used all over the world) (ref 5).
Biochemistry of signalling pathways (ref 7).
Axon guidance and regeneration: Celsr3 and Fzd3 as a novel major pathway (refs 6, 8-10, reviewed in Tissir &
Goffinet, Nat Rev Neurosci 2013, 14:525-35).
